Description

For readers of Schindler's List, The Man Who Broke into Auschwitz and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas comes a heart-breaking story of the very best of humanity in the very worst of circumstances.

I tattooed a number on her arm. She tattooed her name on my heart.

In 1942, Lale Sokolov arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau. He was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival - scratching numbers into his fellow victims' arms in indelible ink to create what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust.

Waiting in line to be tattooed, terrified and shaking, was a young girl. For Lale - a dandy, a jack-the-lad, a bit of a chancer - it was love at first sight. And he was determined not only to survive himself, but to ensure this woman, Gita, did, too.

So begins one of the most life-affirming, courageous, unforgettable and human stories of the Holocaust: the love story of the tattooist of Auschwitz.

A humbling and promising book for the hope of humanity in such outrageous circumstances. The silver lining of a really dark cloud. Very well written and personable book. Lale is such a lovable character, full of heart and determination, had me not able to put this book down..

A truest story of one mans brave and horrifying life at the hands of the hands of monsters and his love of one woman that never faulted.

I was given this as a Christmas gift. I really didn’t fancy it. I decided to read the first chapter and before I knew it I had finished it. I was left sobbing with happiness and sadness. I had my daughter read a specific paragraph. I told her “I hope you meet and marry a Lale”. What a story, what a life, what a man. I am so glad I read this book. It will stay with me forever.

Such a good read, I felt so involved with the characters, and learnt more devastating facts about the time prisoners spent in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
  • Unbelievable read! Very moving.

I just could not put this book down! The journey that Lale went on was incredible and he really did capture my heart! The story is moving and tugs on your heart strings. While this is not strict fact the parts which are most brutal are most certainly factual. It astounded me the pain and suffering the prisoners went through and really does open your eyes to what may have been if the Germans had been victorious!
  • A must.. makes you appreciate life.

I don’t read often, but I must say this book is one if not the best reads I’ve ever had. Emotions hit from every angle, it had the same after effect on me as ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, only this was lived & the photos & maps in the back bring more reality. Please read this it will make you a stronger person, congratulations Heather & can’t wait for a film.
